Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about Appointments

What will happen at my initial evaluation?

Please review the What To Expect at My MM Appointment page to find out what happens at your initial appointment.

How often do I have to be seen?

This program requires that you complete a follow-up appointment every six (6) months.

Why do I need a follow-up appointment in six (6) months?

Marijuana is a method of treatment, just like any other medication or drug. Health professionals should always follow-up with patients about the drugs that were prescribed and how the patient is functioning as a result of the drug. Your follow-up appointments allow us to check in with you to make sure that you are using the drug correctly, tweak your prescriptions as needed, make suggestions to increase the effectiveness of a drug and/or decrease the side effects associated with the drug, and answer your questions.

Do I have a diagnosis that qualifies?

It is possible that medical marijuana may be a treatment option for you. You should check with your medical and mental health providers to see what is recommended. Keep in mind that no drug works for everyone. Just like penicillin doesn't work for everyone, neither does MM.

Questions about Administration and Use

Can I get addicted if I start taking it?

MM is a drug like any other drug. While marijuana doesn't have "addictive properties" similar to drugs like OxyContin or Xanax, you can certainly form a habit to it. It's important to understand that you can develop a negative habit for anything including drug/alcohol use, sex, gambling, etc. Attending our follow-up appointments will help us keep an eye out for concerning behaviors.

I don't want to smoke it. How else can I use it?

There are many options for taking the drug. Smoking is just one of the widely-used options. Marijuana can be used topically (through lotions and creams). It can also be eaten (through oils, baked goods, ice cream).

What if MM doesn't work for me? What do I do?

Marijuana is just one drug that may address your symptoms. Every body (literally) is different. What works for another person may not work for you. It's important that you openly and frequently discuss how your medication is working (or not working) for you with your health provider. This is true for all medications, no matter what you are taking.

What do I do if I have a bad reaction to a specific plant?

If you have a negative reaction to any plant, go to your nearest hospital emergency room or call 911. Please do no wait to contact your healthcare provider.

Questions about Costs and Fees

What is the cost of iHEAL services?

Prices for this program are listed on our MM Card Fees page.

Are there additional costs for the program?

Yes. When you register for a medical marijuana card, which you will do on Maryland's Medical Cannabis Commission website, Maryland requires a $50 registration fee. This fee is separate from iHEAL's fees. You should complete your registration process with the state before your initial appointment.

Why is this program prepaid?

This program is in high-demand. When patients no-show for appointments or cancel at the last minute, it leaves time when another patient could be seen. Collecting payment before the appointment ensures that patients who are making appointments have a legitimate interest in trying MM as a part of their treatment plan and plan to collect the documentation needed for registration.

Do I get a refund if I miss my appointment?

No. Fees for appointments are non-refundable. If you no-show for an appointment, your appointment fee is forfeited. If you cancel an appointment with more than 24 hours' notice, you can apply your funds to a future appointment.

What if MM doesn't work for me, and I have already paid?

Fees for this service are non-refundable. Once you schedule your appointment, your fee will be charged. If you decide that you don't want to pursue a MM card, no refunds will be provided.

Questions about Laws and Regulations

Will my criminal background impact my ability to get a card?

It depends. Generally, we do not accept patients into the program that have a history of felonies or an extensive history of drug charges. You should check with our intake coordinator before you schedule an appointment.

Can I travel with my medical marijuana?

No, you should not travel with any marijuana products. The legalization of marijuana is based on state laws. While Maryland has legalized the use of marijuana for medical reasons, every state has not. You should not carry any marijuana products (lotions, creams, foods, etc.) across state lines.

Do I have to give up my firearms to get a medical marijuana card? No. You do not have to give up legally-owned firearms that you already have. However, you will not be able to purchase additional firearms once you get the MM card. If this is a problem for you, please consider other treatments for your medical and/or mental health concerns.
